Drives
from Dumfries

Dumfries is ideally positioned to allow you to drive to a number of places. Head North towards Sanquhar, and just before you reach it, turn right towards Wanlockhead for a stunning drive through some high hills, or you could even make your right turn before this at Cargenholm for a similar journey. Continuing on the main road will eventually bring you to Ayr, only about an hour and a half from Dumfries. Head West and you will be able to drive along the Solway Coast, and in an hour will come to Newton Stewart, where you can turn left into the wilds of the Machars. Or, you can turn right at Castle Douglas and head towards Ayr that way, through the Galloway Forest. If you don't want to go as far as Ayr, turn left at New Galloway for a scenic run to Newton Stewart, or right to go to Moniaive, then back to Dumfries. An hour or so drive south will take you to the Lake District, I'm sure I don't have to tell you too much about that. Surprisingly, given it's Border location, 'The Borders' is one of the hardest places to reach from Dumfries. The most direct route is to drive to Annan then turn left (although you have to turn right off the A75 first) towards Cannonbie, then head towards Langholm. If you've got more time, go to Langholm via Lockerbie, but it's not a great road. An even worse road, but well worth the effort, is the Moffat to Selkirk one, which will take you by The Grey Mairs Tale waterfall, St. Mary's Loch and some spectacular hills. If you have a while, this is the way to go.
