We’ve Got it Good!

I’ve just returned from a weeks holiday in Letterkenny, and I have to say, it does make you appreciate what we have in Dumfries. Don’t get me wrong, I love Letterkenny for a holiday (my wife’s relatives stay their, so I’ve been a few times) but I wouldn’t want to live their.

The 2 towns are quite similar. Letterkenny is the largest town in Donegal. It is nearer a major city (Derry is only about 20 miles away) than Dumfries but is still the main regional town. Letterkenny does have a large student population, something Dumfries likes to think it has, but hasn’t really!

When I first started going to Letterkenny about 10 years ago, it was quite a small town with a population of about 15,000. In the last 10 years it has grown almost beyond recognition, and must now be around the same size as Dumfries. They have a multiplex cinema, a really good leisure centre and swimming pool (not quite as big as Dumfries’ new one is going to be, but I hope Dumfries’ is half as good) and loads of new shops and hotels (Two Dunns stores, Marks & Spencer, Next, 24 Hour Tesco, Raddison SAS Hotel are ones that trip of the tongue who weren’t even their 3 years ago). Trouble is, it is being allowed to grow out of control. It reminds me of a Spanish resort. If there’s a space, they build on it. They’ve put in another couple of roads, but on the whole, the traffic system is buckling under the pressure. I’ve never believed Dumfries has big traffic problems, and this was yet more proof for me. First thing in the morning and at 5:00 it took ages to get anywhere. And this was with the schools and uni’s on holiday! They’ve stuck in a serious of roundabouts, but as the level of indication at these is even worse than Dumfries, they make little difference.

Dumfries does have it’s problems, I find it more and more difficult to defend the town centre, but we’re not too badly of.
